1776 Bell Tower was composited mechanically as a substitute tower with the illustration of the Pennsylvania State House to show the appearance of "Independence Hall" during the mid-1770s.
The steeple was designed by master-carpenter Edmund Wooley and constructed between 1750-1754. The bell tower was dismantled in 1781 because it was found to be unsafe. The Pennsylvania State House remained without a tower until 1824.
