A Japanese woman sits in a kago [palanquin] carried by two bearers. Another man stands nearby carrying a rucksack with geta [wooden sandals]. Portions of the image have been hand tinted in shades of red, blue, and purple. | Inscription: "A Kango" [kago - palanquin] in ink in block letters by Charles Longfellow. "KANGO" stamped beneath image. | Notes: 1871-1873 as given in inscription for first item in album. This photograph, identified as Felice Beato's, appeared in Italo Zannier's "Verso Oriente" (Florence, 1986).
