Page 1: “January 16th 1854
Dear Friend
In answer to your letter which I received on the 13th I have set myself to write a few lines to you to inform you of my health which is very good at present hoping that when you receive this you will enjoy the same I was hoping to learn that you arrived safely at Syracuse and are enjoying yourself so well I do think I could not enjoy myself so far from home and with strangers. Your Fathers family are all well. I believe George thinks he will take care of his ears he has no mind to try the effects of frost as we did but I hope you freezing your ears did not make you as sick as my face did me. I was very sick after you left home. I have not attended any"
Page 2: "parties since you left but I have attended a wedding uncle was married on the fourth of this month. I had an invitation to a party but did not attend. The old Duchman you mentioned in your letter is prospering finely he says he has made three hundred dollars in two weeks that is doing big business. I cannot say good business for that is not so he has bought him a pretty good horse and wagon he has built him a stable up against the house it is very handy for them it would not be for us I do not think that we will stay where we now are Mr Crosby wants Pa to take his house the one Mr Sairs now occupies but that near not prevent you and me from making your hen yard as you would like to have it"
