Youth Intern Program Horticultural Interns at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens
The interns will reduce the exotic plant infestations and threats to natural areas. The work done on dikes, trails and paths will provide a safer visitor experience and protect the cultural and natural landscape. The restored native plant populations and new native plant display pond will enhance opportunities for visitors to understand the critical role wetlands play in the health of the Anacostia and Chesapeake Bay watersheds. The interns will be exposed to new career fields and gain new skills in conservation, stewardship and horticulture and can serve as possible role models for community youth and other young adult visitors The interns will support the work of three gardeners who are limited in their ability to address the diverse challenges during the peak growing season due to low staffing levels. Additional support from two interns will enhance the quality of the cultural and natural landscapes, fulfilling a core mandate to preserve and protect the park resources. The improvements made will also provide a safer trail and path system for park visitors and safer viewing access along the edge of the display ponds. The cultural landscape and wetlands of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens are a critical part of the Anacostia Watershed and provide significant storm water management and water quality improvement in a dense urban environment. The gardens provide an oasis for the urban population, as well as native plants and animals. Improvements to access, safety and native plant diversity while perpetuating the aquatic lily and lotus plants are core mission goals and reflect current agency emphasis programs (Anacostia Watershed, Chesapeake Bay Watershed, “Green” development, diversity recruitment.) The work of the interns will create direct public benefit.
