My Dear Dick,
I received your kind and very acceptable letter last night, and I was very glad to hear from you. How did mary come to think it was me, I was almost ashamed to send it because it was such a poor one, but as I could not get any other from here unless I sent to town for it and then it would have been too late to send it [a Valentine’s Day card?] Did you get any others besides what I sent you. I thought I would send you some comic ones but I did not. Dick if you do not get that catalogue which I sent you I wish you would let me know, and I will send you another. Dick when you send me the list of the Girls names, mark all the pretty ones and dick please do me a favour, and that is tell me which is yours. Is their any nice boys their that you like as well as me. Oh Dick we used to have some fine times together, and I only wish those times were over. Dick we have a very heavy snow storm indeed and made the railroad so that no cars could go along it for two or three days. but now they have got it pretty much all cleared. Dick so you have to wear plain clothes at your school. your school closes at about the same time ours does. What do you expect to go out west for, and who are you going with. Are you any stouter that you were when at Billy Garrigues. They say it is excellent sleighing in the city. how I would like to have a pair of horses and a sleigh if I would not but them through. You know we have Carpenter shop managers and we had a court held for the purpose of charging them with the rules that they have violated I am a witness against them and we have had some fine fun. Do you board at your cousins. My brother did not catch cold by getting his ducking. Does your master whip the boys when they miss their lessons or cut up. When you write to Jim Mickle please tell him to write to me and give him my directions. You will be surprised when I tell you that Horace Bennett goes to school at Nazareth hall, and I wrote him a letter last Sunday but have not received one from him yet. I received a letter from Charley Noble and he told me, he says he has not received a letter from you since you left school, have you received any from Leeds Miller lately. I have been thinking about writing to Davie [Gip?] for a long while but it seems as if I can not do it yet a while, dont you remember how he used to write letters with lead Pencil. Dick when you write please tell me what you are studying besides Arithmetic & Bookkeeping. I received a letter from home this morning and they say that their is first rate sleighing in the city, but in some of the smaller streets they are so blocked up that they have to cart it away in the night because they will be in the way in the day time Please write soon With dear love to you all.
I remain as ever your affectionate Friend
William Mellor”
