The 630-foot high stainless steel arch, designed by the late Eero Saarinen, symbolizes the opening of the West following the Louisiana Purchase. The Arch was dedicated on May 25, 1968. Gateway Arch National Park (formerly Jefferson National Expansion Memorial).
