Mr. George Hartzog, Jr., Director
National Park Service
Washington 25, D. C.
Dear Mr. Hartzog:
There is presently some interest in Indiana to erect an Indiana monument on the Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Battlefield. Indiana has regimental monuments for each of its regiments involved in the Gettysburg campaign but has never erected a state monument honoring all Indiana soldiers.
What is the position of the National Park Service towards the erection of state markers on the Gettysburg Battlefield? What would you estimate the approximate cost of a monument sufficiently large enough to compare favorably with the other state monuments at Gettysburg to be?
We welcome any comments or suggestions you might have concerning the erection of an Indiana monument and hope that we may recieve a prompt reply, as the matter is presently being considered by our Indiana General Assembly.
Sincerely.
