Stalagmites coated with calcite popcorn in Jewel Cave. Popcorn tends to form in areas with higher-than-average airflow, leading to faster evaporation and the formation of ball-like nodules of calcite resembling popcorn. These nodules can form on, and completely cover, stalactites and stalagmites.
