Box 345 49 West Madison Street Franklin, Indiana 46131 Dear Mr. DeMoss: We have reviewed the proposed text for the Indiana memorial that accompanied your request of January 8. There are several recommendations we would like to make, but before we do we need to clarify the historical accuracy of the right column text. The statement “On July 1, 1863, Indiana sustained the first casualty and the first death among the Union ranks in the Battle of Gettysburg” is based on the Watlington Manuscript in the Indiana State Library. We should have all possible information from this manuscript so we can endeavor to ascertain its veracity. Could you secure copy of this manuscript?
