Dear Mr. DeMoss:
We have reviewed the proposed text for the Indiana memorial that accompanied your request of January 8. There are several recommendations we would like to make, but before we do we need to clarify the historical accuracy of the right column text. The statement “On July 1, 1863, Indiana sustained the first casualty and the first death among the Union ranks in the Battle of Gettysburg” is based on the Watlington Manuscript in the Indiana State Library. We should have all possible information from this manuscript so we can endeavor to ascertain its veracity. Could you secure copy of this manuscript?
As soon as we receive copy of the item in question we will be able to complete our review of the proposed text.
Sincerely yours,
George F. Emery
Superintendent
