Photograph of the West Mesa escarpment along the Rinconada Canyon Trail. Erosion of the Santa Fe Group sediments that underlie a basaltic cap rock has caused large blocks of rock to tumble down the eastern escarpment of the mesa. Most of the petroglyphs were chiseled into the dark patina of desert varnish on these large boulders, exposing the lighter colored basaltic rock beneath.
