Red-backed Salamander
Red-backed Salamander
Red-backed salamanders, Plethodon cinereus, start to hibernate under rocks, logs, leaves or go underground when temperatures reach 35-50 degrees Fahrenheit. Unlike many other salamanders, red-backed salamanders have no aquatic larval stage. They are woodland salamanders and are completely terrestrial. Because they breathe through their skin, they are excellent environmental indicators.
