The interior of the General Grant National Memorial was decorated to honor his service and influence. The layout of the interior, as designed by John H. Duncan, was largely inspired by the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte located within the Dôme des Invalides in Paris. There are also busts of five Union Army generals who served alongside Ulysses S. Grant.
