Fort Ellsworth, Arlington Line, overlooking Alexandria, Virginia,
Fort Ellsworth, located on top of the hill in the background, was constructed following the Federal occupation of Virginia in May 1861.
General John G. Barnard describes Fort Ellsworth as such:
“This work is well situated, immediately covering Alexandria and the railroad depot. Though in second line, it fulfills an important purpose in closing the gap between Forts Lyon and Worth, and sweeping by its fire of rifled guns the approaches to those works, and uniting its fire with theirs, to prevent the establishment of batteries on the heights south of Hunting Creek. The work is amply provided with bomb-proofs and magazines."
Fort Ellsworth was named in honor of Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth, 11th New York Fire Zouaves, who was killed at the Marshall House in Alexandria on May 24, 1861.
