Squaring the log

A log in the process of being squared. the top is flat. There is a guide on the top and a cut is visible on the sides where the carver is cutting the sides to be flat.

Once the log is in the carving shed, the carver has to "make it square, before I can make it round again." The carver uses a guide for the saw.
