Judge Beard and William Marty a SCV member visited DeLue’s studio to view the proposed statue. “This statue represents a Confederate Soldier who has dropped his weapons and who has picked up the Confederate Battle Flag, raised it over his head and with his right hand signals the Confederate troops to follow the Battle Flag as he advances toward the enemy over rough ground.” The Judge goes on to praise the imagery of the statue, the physicality of the soldier portrayed the “ideals and fighting qualities of the Confederate soldier.”
