Researcher preparing to take a sample from a tree on Sand Creek.
A researcher from the University of Colorado prepares to take a sample from a cottonwood tree at the Sand Creek Massacre NHS. The study of tree rings, or dendrochronology, will assist the National Park Service in determining the ages of various trees at the site, including locating possible period trees from the 1860s.
