Richard Hunt, II
01/09/1854
“Waterloo 1st mo 9th 1854 Dear Brother Richard We received thy letter yesterday, and intend to write thee longer and more interesting letters if I possibly can the last letter I wrote thee was both miserably written and miserably ended in fact I have been very careless in my writing and hope thee has not showed them to any one but enough of this. Cousins expected Aunt Mary Ann home this afternoon but Father says she has not come they expect her to-morrow how strange it seems to sit down to table without her. Ameila [Payne] of Seneca Falls came to Uncle Thomas’s on Sixth day morning and as Cousins Sarah Charles and Julia were invited here to tea so she came with them no [loss] Sarah did not come. we had quite a party I will tell thee who was here. Caroline Mackey and husband Richard, Walter and Matilda Quinby. Henrietta Plant. Eliza Jane Mount. Benjamin Bacon & Ema. Mary Vail. Charley and Julia and Ameilia Payne. We had a very pleasant time. Thomas Spackman is still here he has been on the go ever since he came. he recieved a letter from home yesterday. has thee recieved another letter from Sammy since thy return to school? Mother fininshed it and sent it the day after thee left. Thee asks in they letter if we have sleighing. No we have not any nor have we had any since Fifth-day we have very cold weather Thermometer down to 8° above zero but I suppose you have it about as cold. Susan went home on Seventh-day to spend a week so thee may know we are pretty busy. Willie has not been very well and has not been to school since 4th day morning he is much better. Georgie’s face is full of [ ] and looks very badly and I suppose must feel so. I guess I must close, with much love I remain as ever thy affectionate sister Mary.” “Dear Brother Richard As Mary has been writing I think I will try to finish the letter tonight. Thy Apples have been forgotten but Father will send them soon, perhaps tomorrow. how good they will taste to thee after school: tonight it is very clear but cold I am [loss] in hopes we will have snow before long, as the roads are in a very good condition for sleighing. Yesterday afternoon it snowed but enough to cover the ground, do you write and read compositions every week or do you speak pieces: we have to write and read every Third-day, Now did you Christmas Tree come off? Mary & Gilbert Vail with the children intend going home tomorrow I believe George Wolf is going to take them they would hav gone today had it not been so cold, what a nice little fellow little Walter is he is very fat and looks right cunning with a little short dress and shoes. he almost stands alone a great many people think he looks like Georgie. Poor boy he is all broken out on his face he says some words very plainly one in particular Doctor he says very nicely, he also says PaPa and Mama, he can say most all of our names He calls me Satie I think I must to close so Good bye from thy Aff sister Sallie”
