Two grades snake through a sagebrush filled valley.
Notice the second grade on the right of the photograph. An amendment to the Pacific Railway Act of 1862 allowed the two companies to build railroad grade up to 300 miles ahead of their rail crews. This resulted in the two companies passing each other by 250 miles! Fortunately, a meeting spot was agreed upon before parallel track was laid.
