Ctenacanth fin spine
A hand points to a small black spike covered in brown mud.
The fins spine of a Ctenacanth shark was discovered in a section of Mammoth Cave. Ctenacanth sharks are characterized by having pronounced spines right in front of their dorsal fins. These spines were used for deterring predation by larger fish, such as bigger ctenacanth sharks.
