McClure wildfire used for resource benefit, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, summer 2004
The McClure Fire was ignited by lightning on August 21, 2004, and was designated as a Wildland Fire Use Project. Wildland Fire Use is the management of unplanned wildland fires, such as lightning-ignited fires, to accomplish specific resource objectives and is the preferred option when restoration and ecological values are the dominant considerations. Fire is allowed to spread naturally and is monitored by park fire monitoring crew. The McClure Fire, at the northern end of Kings Canyon National Park wilderness area and abutting the John Muir Trail, was medium-intensity ground fire with periodic but intensive spotting and torching up the moderately steep slopes of Evolution Valley. A total of 57 acres burned. Monitors were used to ensure trail safety and to map the fire's progress.
