54.B. War Department, Gettysburg National Park Commission, Gettysburg, PA, November 21, 1923. Letter to The Quartermaster General. From E. B. Cope, Superintendent.
Typed Document
Since the dedication of the Memorial there has been expended by the State for repairs, approximately $12,000. I have made a thorough inspection of the condition of the Memorial. The repairs made in 1921, and 1922 were through and by the best mechanicians here, using good material and the best methods, and I find the Memorial in very good condition, and in my opinion can be kept so at small expense. Relating to having a caretaker, referred to in letter of 1910, of the late Chairman; there is a Park Guard on duty in the vicinity who has had oversight of this Memorial for 13 years, and I have always reported to the Pennsylvania Commission upon repairs needed. Relating to the transfer asked for by the Governor; to state the matter briefly, it appears to me that it would be proper to make the transfer, and it would add small expense to the maintenance of the Park. Very respectfully, E. B. Cope Superintendent 4 inclosures. & photo. Penna. Memorial
