View from the Kilauea Iki Overlook
An expansive view from high above the flat, dark crater is framed by tree branches.
Crater Rim Historic District. The view from the Kilauea Iki overlook is characteristic of views around the crater that are framed by vegetation. This was one of the sites that the original Crater Road showcased as it wound down from the Volcano House to Halemaumau. The road passed very close to the crater rim, providing an opportunity to create an overlook turnout for motorists to pause and view the landscape. In 1959, Kilauea Iki awoke, and the road and viewing area were expanded and realigned to accommodate the crowds who came to watch the eruption.
