Concrete Vault near Halemaumau

A rectangular concrete vault with pieces of timber framing opens into the ground.

Crater Rim Historic District. This is one of two concrete vaults cut into the lava near the Halemaumau parking lot. The vaults were likely the two comfort stations built at the site sometime in the 1920s or 1930s. They are about four feet by ten feet, and six feet deep. Remnants of timber framing are in and near the vaults, which are considered to be archeological resources.
