“Waterloo 1st 13th 1854 Dear Brother Richard. I am again seated to write to thee should have done so last night if we had have been home. but stayed at Uncle Thomas’s as it rained very hard indeed I think harder than I ever saw it before. for almost ten minutes then stopped a little but continued to rain quite hard until 7 o’clock. Aunt Margaret had been up spending the day and so she too had to stay all night. & Uncle George had gone home some time before so he staid alone all night. Aunt Mary Ann received a letter from Cousin Lizzie last night. We were quite surprised to hear that Charley Hicks talked of going to Havanna (I believe that is where he is going) I suppose on account of his health. you will miss him very much this winter. Father sent some apples to you all. I suppose you have recieved them by this time. The east side of the Post Office has been partioned off and converted into a Confectionary shop or an Eating Saloon it is very nice indeed. I suppose you have no snow. We have none either but I think likely we shall have soon for it is growing colder. There was a young man 20 years old drowned in Cayuga lake by falling into a hole in the ice the boy’s that were with him tried to get him out but could not. how dangerous it is skating over deep water. Susan has not come back yet and I don’t know when she will get back again for the roads are so bad we can-not send for her we have a great deal to-do. Willie is not well either nor able to go to school. Sarah has had a boil on her arm but it is much better now Jennie (breaking out and) [crossed out] has a sore hand Georgie’s a sore face & I am getting a run-a-round on my finger. I guess I will let Sarah write some. please excuse my poor writing for I am in some-what of a hurry and have to write a Compositioin to-night write soon again and I will endeavor to as often as possible with much love I remain thy affectionate sister. Mary." “Dear Brother Richard As we did not come home last night thee will excuse us for not writing but hope that thee will not feel dissapointed by not recieving one last evening while were were just setting down to tea Julia upset the Coffee pot on her arm and clothes the Coffee was very hot but did not scald her badly Aunty put her arms in warm water till it drew the Fire. When she put it in in a cloth covered with oil and arnica it is not bad now not much more than two fingers. Tom Spackman started for home last evening at Ten and 1/2 excuse this poor scrawl as I must close so good by from thy affectionate Sister Sarah"
