Tents in the 7th Cavalry Camp on Big Creek Near Fort Hays, Kansas
LIBI_00019_00503; This item is an original albumen, card-mounted photograph of tents at the 7th Cavalry camp near Fort Hayes on Big Creek established while guarding workers on the Union Pacific Railroad. The photograph is 4 3/4 x 7 3/8" (8 x 9 7/8" mounted) and was produced circa 1868. The photographer was possibly W.S. Soule. On the verso, a handwritten notation in pencil reads, "Camp near Ft. Hays, Kansas/Big Creek/7th Cav./Camp/[illegible word] the 7th guarding the builders of the R. Road 1868." Handwritten description provided by Elizabeth B. Custer. An unidentifiable drawing is also on the verso.Note: "Pkg #12" handwritten on the verso.Photograph reprinted in "The Custer Album" by Lawrence A.
