The Texas State monument was placed by the Texas Historical Survey Committee. Tasked with commemorating Texas soldiers during the Centennial of the American Civil War, the Committee wished to place a marker “commemorating the role played by Texas Confederate troops in the Civil War action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.” The National Park Service approved, provided the inscription offer “neither praise nor censure.” The Texas State monument was dedicated in September of 1964. These documents, from the collection of the Gettysburg National Military Park Library are related to the NPS approval of the erection of the Texas monument on the Gettysburg Battlefield. They are presented in chronological order.
