comrades of the different organizations, and Committees were appointed for the purpose of revising these rolls to see that the names were spelt right, to see that the names of deserters were reported to us so that those names should not appear on the tablets of our Memorial. Excellent Committees were appointed in ever Regiment and organization and thousands of letters were written to every survivor known, so that the rolls might be verified in every respect….
In order that you may have an idea of what we had done in this matter, I enclose the original roll of the 148th Regiment, received form the Auditor of the War Department with the list of killed, wounded and died of wounds. This roll was gone over by many members of that Regiment, and undoubtedly a correct list of those present, killed and wounded. General Beaver, afterward governor, and now judge of the Supreme Court of our State, took personal charge of this matter, and undoubtedly his roll as you have it now is absolutely correct….”

“…[Whenever] we have found instances of anyone who was present at the muster of June 30th, 1863 with their several commands who failed to report during any one of the three days of the battle, July 1st to 3rd, 1863, we have omitted same form the rolls and have called the attention of the different regimental organizations and they have favored us in acting so in this respect as well as placing on the rolls the names of some men not included in the muster of June 30th but of whom we had satisfactory evidence of their presence at some fay during the fight.”
