Grand Canyon National Park-North Rim Prescribed Fire-Fall 2024
In December 2024, fire managers at Grand Canyon National Park conducted a prescribed burn operation on the North Rim. These operations aimed to reduce hazardous fuel loads, improve forest health, and restore natural fire regimes. The burns occurred over several days and coincided with prescribed burns planned on the North Kaibab Ranger District.
While the prescribed burns were conducted, smoke was visible from surrounding areas including the Jacob Lake area, State Route 89A, and forest areas near the burn units. Fire managers worked with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality- Smoke Management Division to reduce and mitigate potential smoke impacts.
