Elizabeth Draper Mitchell, mother of Maggie Lena Walker on porch of the Walker home
Elizabeth Draper Mitchell (1848-1922), mother of Maggie Lena Walker. She became pregnant with Maggie Lena Walker while still enslaved by Eccles Max Cuthbert, a white Irishman, journalist, and Confederate soldier, giving birth to Walker in 1864 before the end of the Civil War. She later married William Henry Mitchell (1840-1876). She lived with Walker in her later years, as shown in this image.
