Buena Vista prescribed fire, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, summer 2004
Prescribed fires are ignited by management to achieve resource objectives, which are usually a combination of ecosystem restoration and hazard fuel reduction. The Buena Vista prescribed burn was ignited on June 24-25, 2004. Fuels consisted primarily of short-needle mixed coniferous overstory and low-growing brush. The primary goals of the burn were to reduce hazardous fuels and to form an anchor point for future restoration projects in the Redwood Canyon area of the park. Firing was done by hand using a spot ignition pattern, and a total of 133 acres burned. These images show crew working and smoke and burning conditions of the fire.
