Ruins of the Chautauqua Amphitheater
Ruins of stone arches are built into a wooded hillside.
Glen Echo Park-Clara Barton House. The Chautauqua Amphitheater was a 60-foot tall domed granite structure that once functioned as the centerpiece of the Baltzley brothers' real estate venture. The circular building was the one of the largest of its kind in the country, incorporating 30 massive columns, numerous arches, and a promenade. Years later, after it was intentionally destroyed, the above-ground ruins were leveled and a parking lot was constructed on the site. When flash-flooding caused a collapse in the parking lot, portions of the ruins were exposed on both sides of the creek, including several vaults, walls, and arched stone foundations that once supported the massive structure.
