Tiger Salamander

A brown salamander with gills rests just under the surface of pond water. Green plants grow to the right of the salamander.

A tiger salamander swims just below the surface of the pool seen from the Inscription Trail. Neoteny is a condition where adults retain traits of younger animals. Adult salamanders should lose their gills, but these salamanders spend their entire life in the pool.
