Mineral-stained cliffs with lots of small caves and columns at the base rise out of Lake Superior
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore's namesake cliffs are made of porous sandstone, which is easily shaped by the erosive forces of Lake Superior's waves, wind, and freeze-thaw cycles. The porous nature of the sandstone allows mineral-rich water to seep out of the cliffs, leaving behind colorful streaks.
In this image, the Chapel Rock Member of the Munising Formation is highlighted. The Chapel Rock Member is prone to making caves and columns, like the ones pictured here.
