Jumping spider (Salticidae), Saguaro National Park, 2014.
Jumping spiders are the only spiders that use their eyes to help them hunt! They have some of the best vision among arthropods and use it in courtship, hunting and even navigation. Other spiders primarily use other senses, like tasting, hearing and feeling through sensitive little hairs on their legs to help them find prey. A typical jumping spider lives for about a year and will generally only mate once during its lifetime. With such amazing eyesight, it may not be surprising that a jumping spider's eye pattern is its best identifying characteristic. It will have four pair of eyes: one principal pair that is movable and three secondary fixed pair.
