This 3.2 oz. iron ball, a 1.3 caliber grapeshot, was possibly used in a swivel gun. The smallest type of cannon, a swivel gun could be mounted on a keelboat’s bow, or forward end, which in combination with the swivel, allowed for a wide arc of movement that covered river banks as well as the channel ahead. Of all ammunition discovered at Fort Union, grapeshot is the largest, ranging in size from .94” to 1.46” in diameter.
