Della Stodghill to Alice Mary Longfellow, 1906
Manuscript letter
[printed letterhead: The Academic Department, Tuskegee Institute]
Dear Friend,
I am very glad to have the opportunity of expressing my gratitude to you for your loving kindness in aiding me while here in this school. I am sure if it were not for your kind Thoughts I should not have been able to remain in this school. I shall never find words great enough to express my appreciation for your generous aid; and I will assure you that your kindness will not be wasted.
I Think I shall take sewing before leaving this great school. I am a member of the A Middle Class which is next to the Senior Class. My studies are History (English), Literature, Grammar, Chemistry, and Algebra. I like Algebra and Grammar best of all. I am very anxious to master them all, so I may go out into the world and do good for my race.
There are many inducements to cause students to flock here; for an example, we have a number of religious Associations, which every student may attend. I attend the Christian Endeavor and the Y.W.C.A. This Young Women’s [p. 2] Christian Association is held only for the young women, and has a large attendance every Sunday after noon. These meetings have helped me spiritually and socially, they are held every Sunday at different hours of the day, which gives each one an opportunity of attending all. Again Thanking you for your aid and generosity [sic], I am,
Yours very gratefully,
Della Stodghill.
