Dear Sir:
On Friday, September 18, 1964, a bus of women sponsored by the Knoc[x?] County Choral Club toured the Battleground at Gettysburg, Pa.
As we toured the grounds our guides, Mr. J. K. Cole, pointed out the various monuments on the fields and also called attention to the monuments the various states had erected to honor the dead from that state. He did not mention Indiana and I asked him if Indiana had a monument on the battleground. He told us that Indiana was one of the few states that had not yet erected a memorial to their dead and that Texas had just last week dedicated their monument which we did see.
We were very embaressed that 100 years had passed and our state had not yet honored the Indiana dead, and I especially since my great grandfather had given his life his life in the Civil War. We all determined to start the ball rolling for Indiana to get a monument built as soon as possible.
After we got home and were telling folk what we had in mind, 4 people have told us that we do have a monument. I called Judge Curtis Shake who is quite up on historical subjects and he said he had toured the field once and thinks he remembers seeing one from Indiana but would not swear to it that we have one. He suggested to me that I write to you and ask you to tell us definitely if Indiana does or does not have a monument on the Gettysburg battlegrounds. If we do have, do you have a map with its location marked or a picture of it. If we do not have on, then we want to get started as quickly as possible to have one set up from Indiana.
Thank you very much for helping us out in this problem.
Sincerely
Mrs. Carl W. Miller
