Indiana Commission Here To Seek Site For $20,000 Monument On Battlefield
Five members of the state of Indiana Battlefield Commission Friday met with park service officials to discuss possible sites for their proposed $20,000 memorial to the Indiana soldiers who fought here.
Commission members headed by Atty. Thurman DeMoss, were Miss Margaret Colclesser, secretary; Mischawaka, Ind.; Ralph Rader, Akron, Ind.; J. Ben Rickets, Wheatland, Ind.; and Galen Colclesser, of Huntington, Ind.
Following the meeting with Park Superintendent George Emery and Park Historian Thomas Harrison the commission members and their families began a tour of the field to examine possible sites.
NO DEFINITE DESIGN
The spokesman for the commission, chairman DeMoss said that the commission members and their families expect to spend the weekend here taking in the historical sights.
No definite design has been set for the monument thus far, DeMoss revealed. The $20,000 funds, DeMoss said, were donated for the memorial by the Indiana State General Assembly.
Two commission members, Rader and Rickets, are former Indiana state legislators. Rickets was the legislator who introduced the initial legislation forming the monument commission.
Thus far Indiana, Tennessee, Louisiana and Mississippi are the only remaining states without monuments on the field. Tennessee, Louisiana and Mississippi have all formed commissions to put up markers and Louisiana has already chosen a sculptor for their proposed monument.
