On front of document on right: “Boston Feby 10th 1853 R.P. Hunt Esqr. Waterloo Dear Sir The six Bales of Sheetings were a long time on the way reaching us the last of January; we have shown the goods to our buyers who have early in the season stocked themselves with similar descriptions at a little better than 7 ½ cts for ten days past, owing somewhat to bad weather we have had but a limited trade, & it is yet early for Jobbers to be active a few of them having distant trade – are beginning to be busy, but the general trade is still quiet, it being early in the season – The goods are very well liked and have intrinsic value, and as the trade opens will sell – our own views however are they might be improved in the make so as to bring more price, since the quality of the cotton is good – the salvage is faulty and might be improved, and with care they might be woven, with fewer threads dropped which would remedy, the goods from such cause, could we have got a man" On back of document on left: " who we well know to Who is skilled in this way- we should have deemed it of sufficient importance to have gone to the expense of having him paid you a visit & look'd through your mill – believing he would have suggested some Slight alterations & improvements, more than to compensate for cost – but he has been so engaged, that we have not yet been able to command his services & we do not see much chance for it for some time to come – In the mean time as they are selling readily in N Y, at 7 ½ which is a full price we recommend you forwarding there – your drafts have been duly honored & when your convenience is served, by it they can be as well accepted there ^N. Y. as here, as we are by them advised of such acceptance & carry them into our Books, here in accordance – Very respectfully Your obt Srvt Almy Patterson & Co Freight on 6 Bales was ninety with five cases, by comparing with the freight for shawls would make the Cotton about $7.90 If you hereafter Send please give the weights separate or it would be better to have a separate Receipt & Ticket” On front of document on left: "Almy Patterson & Co Boston 2mo 10th 53"
