Sunset prescribed burn in Grant Grove, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, fall 2002
Prescribed fires are designed by management to achieve resource objectives, usually a combination of ecosystem restoration and reduction of high hazard fuel accumulations. The Sunset Fire burned 147 acres. Predominant firing technique consisted of blacklining combined with strip head fires. Although the park was in extreme fire danger at the time of burn, all other parameters were favorable. It was decided to commence ignition in the early evening and burn through the night, when conditions are more benign. These photos show various images of night burning, hotshot crew on ignition operations and ignition specialists at work.
