Sunset over the Point Reyes Lighthouse, Point Reyes National Seashore, 2015.
Point Reyes NS is the windiest place on the Pacific coast and the second foggiest place in North America! Built in 1870, this lighthouse retired from service in 1975 when an automatic light was installed. It was then that the lighthouse was donated to the National Park Service for preservation. The Point Reyes Lighthouse lens is a 'first order' Fresnel, the largest of its type. Before the Fresnel lens, lighthouses used mirrors to reflect light out to sea. The most effective reflective lighthouse could only be seen 8-12 miles away. After the Fresnel lens, the brightest lighthouses could be seen as far away as 24 miles.
