The bare ground is divided into squares by strings tied around pegs. The man in back reaches into a hole as the other two people turn to look at what he is doing. All wear long pants, although the person in front is barefoot. Various tools, including, a shovel, trowel, and pail are strewn throughout the dig. Immediately behind them is a stone wall against which leans a large piece of plywood propped up by other pieces of lumber. A sign next to them reads "Ft Spokane F 4 27 May 1985."
