Fire in the Ecosystem: The Vision Fire burned over 12,356 acres, most of which was wilderness within Point Reyes National Seashore. It was started by an illegal campfire outside the park and burned on private lands, causing the loss of over 45 homes. The critical factor in the outcome of the fire was the circumstances of weather. Hot, dry, fast moving northeast winds produced a rate of spread of 3,500 acres per hour and relative humidity as low as 6%. The fire raced through forest, shrub, and grasslands triggering a series of ecological changes.
