"...It is beyond description to conceive what the men suffer..." Colonel Philip Van Cortlandt, Camp Valley Forge 2nd N.Y. Regiment in a letter to George Clinton Governor of New York. 13 February 1778 DESCRIPTION: Granite with bronze plaque 4' x 5' x 16". DONOR & DATE: The State of New York, 1970. HISTORICAL DATA: This marker is almost identical to the one erected for New Hampshire due to the fact that all New York and New Hampshire regiments served under the same commander at Valley Forge (Enoch Poor). Although the state of New York contributed only four regiments to the Continental Army they were generally larger than regiments from other states. New York also maintained an extensive militia on its troubled frontier. Several Loyalist units were also drawn from Southern New York.
