Memorial Marker--Major General Armstrong Major General John Armstrong In Command of the Pennsylvania Militia Guarded the Roads from Philadelphia And the Approaches to Sullivan's Bridge And the Camp DESCRIPTION: Pale gray granite monolith, rough-hewn on top surface and three sides. Front face a band across the foot of the monument is rough hewn to a height of 14", the remainder is a background to the plaque. Size: 54" x 26" x 78" high. DONOR & DATE: Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, 1914. HISTORICAL DATA: General Armstrong, crusty commander of the Pennsylvania Militia was a veteran of the Indian Wars and was known as the "Hero of Kittanning" for his exploits on the Pennsylvania frontier routing Indians from their village bearing that name. Some Pennsylvania militia were present at the encampment and their duty was to guard the roads from Philadelphia and the northeast approaches to Sullivan's Bridge.
