General George Armstrong Custer at His Field Headquarters in Virginia
LIBI_00019_00256; This item is an albumen stereograph (card-mounted photograph) of General George A. Custer seated in front of his Virginia field headquarters with a dog. The stereograph is 3 1/4 x 7" mounted on a yellow mount and was produced circa 1863. The negative was produced by Brady & Co. of Washington and was published by E. & H.T. Anthony & Co. as part of a series of images titled, "The War for the Union." On the front, typed captions on the left and right side of the image read, "Photographic History/The War for the Union." On the verso, a typed notation reads, "War Views./ Gen. Custer at his Head Quarters in the field, Army of the Potomac, Va." The publisher's stamp is also printed on the verso.Note: "Pkg 3/Custer Chest" handwritten on the verso. Photograph reprinted in "The Custer Album" by Lawrence A.
