Tulip blooms (Tulipa), Longfellow House Washington's Headquarters National Historic Site, 2016.
Tulipanin is the anthocyanin (i.e., water-soluble pigment that may appear red, purple or blue depending on the pH) found in tulips. Other compounds, namely tuliposides and tulipalins, are also found in tulips and are responsible for the allergic reactions common to florists who cut tulip stems as well as tulip bulb sorters.
