A cave opening makes a wide arc over a rubble floor and frames a stand of tall pine trees below a cloudy sky.
The surface of older lava flows have had more time to collect windblown soil particles, nutrients, and seeds. When combined with erosion, habitats like a ponderosa pine forest can thrive in the full sunlight and limited moisture. Lava tube caves, by contrast, appear vacant.
