Samuel Laing letter to Richard Pell Hunt

“Elba 11 Mo 4th 1828
Respected friend,
Some time has elapsed since I saw or heard from thee, and am sorry now to inform thee that I have met with a considerable of a disappointment lately with regards to money – The man to whom I sold a farm to last winter has returned it, to me again in consequence of having been dissappointed by his Brother on whom he depended for about four hundred dollars to pay me, and having no means of his own to raise it he got discouraged and would pay no more – I was advised by my neighbors to take it again, as it was a good & salable place & worth the money for which I sold – I now hold it for sale as it is going to be difficult to get along unless I sell it -- By taking it back I am deprived of about $600 which I now ought to have to help myself with – I shall be under the necessity of setting out, for N. Jersey in a few days to see to some business belonging to my Brother in laws Estate yet unsettled – I shall probably go down the canal and my Sister with me so that, I shall not be able to call at Junius – I want to hear from thee and family – pleas write immediately on the rec’t of this – and give my respect to thy wife and Lucretia
