Mary Potter School Shop Building (Oxford, North Carolina)
Outdoors, two women stand in front of a large sign next to a brick building. They partially obstruct the sign which reads, in part, Restoration of the Historic Mary Potter School "Shop Building."
Several Historic Preservation Fund grants from both the African American Civil Rights grant program and the History of Equal Rights grant program have funded the rehabilitation of the vacant historic Mary Potter School Shop Building to serve the public as a multi-purpose community and literacy center. Originally, vocational classes in the Mary Potter School Shop Building created African American entrepreneurs and citizens. The former Mary Potter Academy/High School vocational building taught students home economics, typing and shorthand, carpentry, welding, masonry, farming, and other vocational skills. The skills learned in this building and the entire Mary Potter School campus optimized students’ opportunity for jobs upon graduation. The School Shop Building is a contributing building within the local Oxford Historic District. These projects will fully restore the Mary Potter School Shop Building as a multi-purpose community and literacy center for the residents of Granville County.
